This format of family session might look a little different than what you're used to. While they're more involved and call for some extra planning and investment, the results are far more soulful than what you would find in a more traditional photoshoot. These specialized adventure sessions are a stunning choice for those interested in a fully styled, artistic experience for more painterly, poetic results. Let's check out some questions below to get a better idea of what to expect and how it all works.

When Should I Book?
It’s best to reach out in advance, both because I take family sessions on a very limited basis, and as I tend to book out by at least a month, especially during the fall season. We will also need this time to plan your outfits. Do You Do Weekends?
Portrait sessions are booked weekdays only during wedding season, though I am usually flexible for weekends during January-March. Sessions take place during sunset, when we get that soft, golden lighting. Sunset time varies between 3pm-7:30pm throughout the year. I recommend treating this like a special investment, similar to taking our kids out of school for a vacation. Do Sessions Have To Be At Sundown?
Yes, I do all sessions at this time. Please know, I’ve done hundreds of sessions over the years, most of them with toddlers, and you might be surprised to find that they handle it quite well. What I’ve learned is that no matter what time of day, whether it’s 10am, 1pm, or 7pm, toddlers are opinionated ‘round the clock. The main difference on my end is that the sunset lighting is truly integral to capturing this magical quality to our photos. But typically, toddlers have a blast, even on a summer night at 8pm. I recommend a full belly and some fruit snacks for motivation, and otherwise, we just follow their lead. What If My Kids Won't Sit Still?
Good! That means they’re healthy and functioning properly. Look carefully at my work, and notice that almost none of it involves children posed and cheesing for the camera. It’s not something I want from them, and it’s not something I want from you either. Instead, we’re going to let them do what they do best — play, run, cuddle, explore, get dirty, maybe even eat a bug or two. My point is, this isn’t the place for starched pants or centered hair bows. Sometimes, not even shoes. This is a place for adventure and magic in its purest form. What Should We Wear?
All sessions include hands-on styling to achieve that organic, fairytale look you see in my work. Using your base preferences as inspiration, I personally track down pieces for you to build something magical. It’s important to leave a little wiggle room in your budget for this, as clothing is a very integral part of our masterpiece that we can’t afford to overlook. Just as quality paint and canvas are important to a painting, so too are clothing, accessories, and scenery to our portraits. Where Will We Shoot?
I have many locations all around the state that I can recommend for us, from beaches, to forests, to fields and more. Most of these spots tend to revolve around nature. Forgotten meadows or secluded rocky peaks; special places that give us the beauty and solitude needed to create such magical photos. Can We Bring Our Dog?
While I adore dogs, for the type of work I do, this isn't going to be a great place for them for a few reasons. These adventure sessions require me to have all of your limbs free and all of your attention, and I've found that the addition of a dog unfortunately adds quite a lot of stress and distraction, meaning I don't fully get to deliver the work you see in my galleries. For photos with your dog, I'd highly recommend seeking out a photographer who offers mini sessions! These are a fantastic opportunity to get some portraits with your dog. Do You Do Mini Sessions?
I don’t. I learned long ago that I’m not able to achieve this type of narrative, storytelling imagery in a short timeframe. Kids often need to warm up to the session, and that in itself can take 20 minutes. Often, the most touching photos come from the latter half of our shoot. |
